The vertical structure in the third frame is (I think) the end of a tramway that went up the mountain behind this mill. Maybe this was the way ore came into the mill. I read that some of the tramway can still be seen but I could not see it from the mill and I didn't feel like climbing the mountain in the heat. The mill itself is very large, and must have been quite an undertaking to build and operate. The vertical beams in the second and third photos are solid and are about 24 inches square. The whole structure looks like it was about 80 feet by 60 feet, or maybe more. It was big.
Eberhart is about 5 miles further along the road from US50 that goes into Hamilton. However, it is not nearly as good once past Hamilton:
Here is the Nevada marker that is out on US50:
After this I got going .. driving .. I knew I was going to be in Fallon by night, but not sure where I was going to go in between. I wound up just driving 50, which is a great drive and I know I have talked about it in the writeups of previous photo trips. I would up going back to my favorite Nevada dump, in the Dixie Valley. Weird to be photographing a dump, perhaps, but the sun and heat do interesting things to the paint on the old cars and other trash just lying in the desert. (I had a few of these images in the Artspace show.) Anyway, I could not resist, and shot some more. The snaps here are not really like what I shot on film. These are mostly snapshots to show what the place looked like.
That was about it for the day. The sun went down as I was doing this and, being back at lower elevation, it was hot. I'd say about 100.
From here it is about 90 miles to Fallon, past Sand Mountain, which I would like to photograph again, and a few places in the Carson Sink that I would like to get to. I did none of that and just went on in to Fallon. Fallon feels like a return to "civilization" after being away. It's fairly large, full of neon, and is only about 50 miles from Reno.
